What are your medical credentials?
I have been practicing for over 40 years, with a focus in sports medicine and athletic performance. I received my Doctor of Chiropractic in 1976 from New York Chiropractic College (Columbia Division). In 1992, I began training with Dr. John Patterson, who enlightened me and taught me to see the body in a more heightened way. Over the next 4-5 of years of working together, we co-developed an innovative process for evaluating and treating patients that continues to evolve to this day.
Why did you choose to become a sports medicine professional?
As a young man, I suffered from terrible headaches. After my first visit to a chiropractor, my headaches were remedied and I saw the amazing power a chiropractor can have to help improve the lives of his patients.
What health issues do you find yourself treating most commonly at Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™?
We primarily treat sports-related injuries and ailments like hip pain, shoulder conditions, and various foot and ankle injuries. In addition to more active patients, whether they be professional athletes or weekend warriors, we also treat children and baby boomers who may just be interested in improving their conditioning or treating chronic pain.
How would you describe the typical Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ patient experience?
Providing life-changing care.
Are there any new medical advancements or technologies that Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ is currently offering or would like to offer?
I have been working on my certification for a breakthrough muscle integration technique called Advanced Muscle Integration Technique (AMIT) that helps stimulate communication between neurological pathways of the brain to turn the muscles on. I will offer this in August 2017.
What message about Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ do you wish to convey to the community?
Our proprietary Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ Release Technique is a stand-alone system that incorporates several disciplines in order to bring about long-term physical corrections and restore balance to the body.
What do you like most about the types of patients you see?
No two patients we see are the same. It’s always gratifying to discover the root cause of a patient’s pain or issue in order to provide them with the best possible treatment.
What differentiates Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ from others in your field?
I believe my expertise and experience allows me to approach healing the body in a way that exceeds conventional healing methods. By utilizing restorative therapies and our proprietary Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ Release Technique, we are able to optimize our treatments and restore balance to the body.
What has been your most gratifying experience in your years of practicing?
Early on in my career, I had a patient who was in an automobile accident prior to seeing me. She was confined to a wheelchair for over a year. After trying a number of more conventional methods without seeing any substantial improvement, she paid me a visit. After her appointment, she regained sensation in her legs for the first time since her accident. After her third visit, she was walking.
What do you see as the future of Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™?
I would like to keep working hard and continue developing specialized techniques so Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ will evolve as a worldwide leader in sports performance and rehabilitation for all walks of life. Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I would love to spread my signature healing and innovative wellness approach to others all over the country.
We appreciate Dr. Hatrak taking time out of his busy schedule to help explain what sets Synergy Sports Wellness Institute™ apart from others in the field of sports medicine, performance and injury rehabilitation. Understanding Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can be debilitating, preventing an individual from performing the simplest of tasks such as eating, dressing, working, etc (1). In fact, you may not realize how important your shoulders are, until your mobility and usage is limited due to injury. At Synergy, we understand how painful shoulder injuries can be, and that is why we work with our patients to restore mobility and eliminate the pain associated with shoulder ailments.
How Common Is Shoulder Pain?
Around 20% of the population suffers from shoulder pain, with rotator cuff injuries being the most common shoulder ailment reported. As such, shoulder pain is the third most common musculoskeletal ailment reported to primary care practitioners (2). It is no coincidence then, that Synergy treats a high volume of patients complaining of rotator cuff pain.
What Is The Rotator Cuff?
Your rotator cuff, which is located in your shoulder, is made up of four muscle tendons, which help your shoulder move, and also provide stability (3). These muscle tendons are what hold your shoulder in the socket (4). Pain or injury of these muscle tendons can occur from frequent use, or from aging. In fact, rotator cuff injuries are considered normal, age-related degenerative disorders (4). That is not to say however, that repetitive overuse cannot cause injury. Repetitive motions can add to the already degenerative disorder, or could be the primary cause. For instance, throwing a baseball, swinging a golf club or tennis racket, lifting, etc. are all repetitive activities that can result in overuse of the shoulder, thus injuring the rotator cuff muscle.
How Can Synergy Help?
Our first step when treating shoulder pain is to accurately diagnose the root cause of the shoulder pain. Once we can eliminate tears, or other complicating factors as a culprit of the pain or injury, we can move to stabilize the shoulder through our proprietary Synergy Release Technique. Once the shoulder is stabilized, we can then employ additional therapies to complete treatment, and rehabilitate the injury. These additional therapies include Frequency Specific Micro-Current, Synergy Release Massage Therapy, and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Frequency Specific Micro-Current:
Frequency Specific Micro-current (FSM) is a frequency based, non-invasive modality that heals tissues in the body at an increased rate. The way FSM works is that it increases ATP production by 500%. What this means is, FSM therapy is increasing the energy production in the cells. When your cells are healthy, your tissues begin to heal at an accelerated rate. Simply put, the faster your cells can regenerate, the faster the tissues can heal.
Our bodies are made up of all different types of tissues: bone, ligament, tendon, muscle, etc. FSM is not limited to only healing the tearing and breaking of tissues, but organ functionality as well. The possibilities are endless. FSM can help to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with shoulder pain, and rotator cuff injuries.
Synergy Release Massage Therapy:
Synergy Release Massage Therapy is a unique, soft tissue modality that differs from typical massage therapy. The reason being, Synergy Release Massage Therapy focuses on correctly assessing the pain or complaint, in order to rule out underlying biomechanical issues. By conducting orthopedic tests and taking specific measurements, our therapists are able to identify the root cause of pain. Once this cause is identified, proper treatment techniques can be applied, thus allowing the therapist to properly address the injury, instead of simply treating the symptom.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
Inflammation is a common response to many different injuries and illnesses that our bodies experience. This inflammation is our body’s way of preventing infection and allowing the body to heal the injury or illness. Unfortunately, inflammation restricts blood flow and oxygen flow, which can slow the healing process. This is where Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can help.
HBOT is a natural, non-invasive medical treatment that enhances the body’s healing process by introducing increased oxygen levels into the body. On average, we inhale around 20 percent oxygen from the air we breathe. This oxygen is diffused into our bloodstream, and carried throughout the body in our red blood cells. Inflammation from trauma can prevent the red blood cells from reaching the injury site, delaying healing.
When we utilize HBOT, filtered ambient oxygen is breathed in a mildly pressurized chamber. This pressurization allows the oxygen to dissolve into the plasma, which is then carried throughout the body, and to the injury site. Oxygen administered in this manner can increase the rate of healing for many different injuries and illnesses.

Understanding Knee Pain In Children
Osgood-Schlatter Disease (OSD), commonly known as knee pain in children, is a condition that arises between 8-15 years of age. But don’t panic! OSD is not a disease in the traditional sense of the world, but rather an overuse injury of the knee.
Vaishya (2016) describes OSD as occurring at the point where the patellar tendon meets the tibial tuberosity. The result is pain and inflammation at the injury site, and this pain usually increases during physical activities such as running and jumping. Most often, you will notice a bony protrusion at the tibial tuberosity, which is one of the tell-tale signs of OSD. As time goes on, the pain may increase, and become more of a permanent fixture, instead of simply occurring during activity. The image below is meant to provide you with a visual representation of OSD. As you can see, there is a bony protrusion just below the patellar tendon.
Figure 1: Osgood-Schlatter Disease in a 14-year-old male. Image (a) depicts the frontal view of bilateral OSD. Image (b) depicts the lateral view of OSD. Our bodies are made up of all different types of tissues: bone, ligament, tendon, muscle, etc. FSM is not limited to only healing the tearing and breaking down of tissues, but organ functionality as well. The possibilities are endless. While Micro-Current is a very effective, non-invasive alternative to surgery, sometimes it is not always the only treatment option to utilize.
FSM simply helps to reduce the pain and inflammation associated with Osgood-Schlatter Disease in young teenagers. While it is hard to completely prevent the pain in the knees of growing children, FSM will help to reduce the discomfort by increasing the healing rates of the tissues, and manage the inflammatory response associated with this condition.

One Bite At A Time
I want to begin 2017 with a riddle. If memory serves me correctly, I first heard this from head coach Ralph Spry, while I was a student assistant athletic trainer for the Auburn University Track Team, and it has stuck with me ever since.
What is one thing that is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the rich need it, the poor have it, and if you eat it you will die.
Any Ideas? Seems like a lot to process. you might be racking your brain trying to find an answer to everything all at once. But what if you took a step back and looked at it a little differently. Instead of trying to find the answer to all five parts, what if you just answer the first question.
The answer to the riddle is nothing. Nothing is greater than God. Nothing is more evil than the devil. The rich need nothing. The poor have nothing. If you eat nothing, you will die. Most people I tell this to are stumped until I tell them to simply answer the first question, then the get it right away.
Now, what if we apply this same idea to our New Year’s resolutions. After all, it is that wonderful time of the year when we list out all the things we are going to change about ourselves over the next 12 months. Most people include health goals such as live healthier, work out more, eat better, lose weight, etc. January comes around, and we try to fulfill those resolutions all at once. We end up getting overwhelmed, frustrated, and eventually we give up. But what if you just started out with the first goal: live healthier. Then that might snowball into working out more, and eating better. The next thing you know, it’s a new year and a new you!. It is like another one of my favorite riddles: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Don’t focus so much on the big picture, tat you end up getting scared and closing your eyes. Just knock it out one bite at a time.
All of us in the Synergy family are here to help you be your best – not just in January – but all year long. Whether it is taking care of that old injury that you use as an excuse to skip out on going to the gym, or a new injury that has occurred. What ever it is, we are here for you. So don’t get overwhelmed and frustrated by your New Year’s resolutions. Just answer that first question, take one bite at a time, and remember, we are here to help you be the best you can be.
I could probably list off numerous qualities that separates a Synergy Release Therapist from your typical massage therapist, but one of the biggest differences is our focus on assessment. A quality assessment before any type of body work allows the therapist to take your subjective complaints (It hurts here, I feel tight there, ect.), and link it to, or rule out a bio-mechanical cause for the complaint.
Through orthopedic tests and taking specific measurements, we are able to isolate the cause of your pain or discomfort in your body. We then use multiple hands on techniques to address the cause of your pain, instead of simply treating the symptom.
See The Difference
One of the most common examples of this is the patient who comes in complaining of pain in the middle of their back and shoulder. With a proper assessment we can isolate the cause of the pain, which could be coming from a completely different area of the body. In the pictures below, you can see that the patient’s right shoulder is higher off the table than the left. In his case, this is caused by tight muscles in the anterior neck, anterior chest wall, and the muscles that internally rotate the shoulder.
The therapists at Synergy Sports Wellness Institute are constantly researching and learning new assessment techniques. By having this wealth of assessment knowledge, we are able to develop a personalized treatment plan for each patient, with the goals of removing pain, preventing re-occurrence of the symptoms, and increasing performance potential. So, don’t remain in pain any longer. Call today to schedule your appointment with Trey Tucker.
You Are What You Digest
There is a well-known saying that “You are what you eat.” The reality is that we are what we digest and absorb. Digestion is one of the most vital processes our bodies perform. Without digestion, we would not be able to obtain the nutrients needed by the millions of cells in our bodies. We live in a fast paced world where we are sometimes forced to eat on the run, and gulp down our food. We need to be asking ourselves, are we digesting our food properly?
2. Chew slowly, and with a steady rhythm.
3. Chew your food until it has lost all texture.
2 Organic Carrots
1 Organic Onion Quartered
2-3 Cloves of Organic Garlic (Optional)
2 TBSP Organic Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar (Helps to extract more nutrients from the bones)
3-4 Lbs of Grass fed Beef Bones or a Combination of Beef and Free Range Chicken Bones
1 Bay Leaf or Herbs of Choice
Salt and Pepper1. Put Vegetables in the bottom of a crock pot and put bones on top of the veggies.
2. Pour filtered water in the crock pot to cover the bones and add Apple Cider Vinegar.
3. Cook on low for 24-48 hours, adding more water when necessary to keep the bones covered.
(Remove scum from top of lid once it forms).
4. Remove the bones and enjoy. Keep extra broth in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, or freeze.
(You can skim the fat off the broth once in has been chilled)Hint: Pour broth into lightly oiled large muffin cup pan and freeze. Once frozen, remove frozen broth from muffin pan and keep blocks of frozen broth in a zip lock bag. Then when you want a cup of broth just take one out and reheat.* You can roast the bones and veggies before putting into crock pot for a deeper, richer flavor

“Food is an important part of a balanced diet.”
It is hard to grasp the concept of food just being food: something delicious for us to enjoy (Markey, 2015). More often than not, we feel the need to deprive ourselves of certain types of food in order to lose weight and live healthy. All this seems to do is make us want those “bad” foods more. Well, I have good news for you. You don’t need to diet to lose weight. You don’t need to diet to live healthy. You don’t need to diet, period. There is a better way.
Life is hydrated, colorful, and active.
Start your day off with a glass of lemon water. “Lemon water flushes out toxins, balances your pH, assists in weight loss, and boosts your immune system (Freytag, 2014).” It is important to stay hydrated throughout the day as well. Staying hydrated has many benefits including fighting infection, boosting energy, improving productivity, and keeping skin clear.
Eat fresh foods that come in a variety of colors, and that are as close to their natural state as possible (Freytag, 2014). Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, along with lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and nuts.
Be sure to stay active. You don’t have to run a marathon the first week you start exercising. Start small, with an energizing walk, and then build up to more intense workouts. The goal is to stay active and move every day.
Don’t DIET. Instead, EDIT what you eat.
A simple rearranging of the letters in the word DIET provides us with a much more manageable solution; EDIT what you eat (Freytag, 2014). Healthy eating is not a depravation plan; it is a lifestyle. It isn’t about saying no to yourself, it is about saying yes! Diets give you rules to follow. Healthy eating gives you control. After all, isn’t control what we are seeking?
Don’t beat yourself up.
Every day is a clean slate. If you made a bad choice yesterday, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just make a better choice today, and stop feeling guilty if you indulge every so often. Set realistic goals for yourself and keep a positive mindset. If you are trying to lose weight, keep in mind that results don’t occur overnight. Start small, don’t compete with other (or compare yourself to others), and continue to encourage yourself to achieve greater things.
It starts with LOVE and ACCEPTANCE,
If you do not love and accept yourself as you are right now, you will never reach your goals. This is the hardest and most important concept to grasp and put into practice. You can’t expect to see a change if you continue to dislike or even loathe yourself. You must first accept yourself for who you are, and what you look like…flaws and all. Your thoughts and mindset will control your actions. Encourage yourself every day. Look at yourself in the mirror and speak positive words of encouragement and love to yourself. Stay positive, and stop comparing yourself to others.

What does Autism, Brain Injury, and Multiple Sclerosis have in common?
You’re probably saying “absolutely nothing.” Normally you would be right, but did you know that these are all conditions which may benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? In fact, everyone can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a natural medical treatment which enhances the body’s healing process by breathing oxygen in a moderately pressurized chamber. When oxygen is administered under pressure, it dissolves easier into our plasma, making oxygen more readily available for use by the body. Synergy Sports Wellness Institute utilizes mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy that reaches 4.2 PSI (example chamber pictured above).
How does this help with injury?
When our bodies experience an injury, its initial response is to become inflamed at the injury site. This inflammation is our body’s way of preventing infection and allowing the body to heal the injury. During this time, oxygen flow to the injury site may decrease, which slows the healing process. When we utilize HBOT, oxygen can reach the wound site faster because our plasma is able to carry the oxygen throughout our bodies, allowing healing to take place at greater rates.
HBOT is a noninvasive therapy that is used to treat a variety of issues. Below are some common conditions which may benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
Schedule your HBOT session today, and breathe your way to a healthy life!
